lolololabilly asked:
What are your top 10 guiltiest pleasures regarding YA books?
like tropes/elements? or actual books? I’LL DO BOTH COOL OK
Tropes:
- FAMILIEEEEEES. I suppose it would really be “cool relatives/friends of the supernatural protagonist that are often cooler than the actual main characters” because dude I just love all the dynamics yo!!!! GIVE ME SUPPORTING CHARACTERS OR GIVE ME DEATH
- FALLEN ANGELS. Idegaf y’all I love this shit. CREEPY ASS NEPHILIM? CHECK. 2000 YEAR LONG REINCARTION LOVE STORY? I AM THERE WITH BELLS ON. YOU CANNOT KEEP ME AWAY FROM A FALLEN ANGEL STORY AND TBH YOU NEVER WILL because you know that when shit gets Biblical it also, by proxy, gets real.
- The inevitable second book breakup/complication/introduction of second love interest/rival: because yeah I love that angsty shit. What is the point in reading YA if you don’t? Also BOOM as soon as you have a second love interest you have ship wars and they are the most fun you can have without taking your clothes off.
- “”Crazy”” makeout sessions that are PG13 at best: because these books are marketed to the Taylor Swift demographic and sometimes girls just want to read about boys who keep it on the kitchen counter, guys.
- Backstories!!!! GIVE ME ALL THE BACKSTORIES!!! ESPECIALLY FOR THE BEST FRIENDS/MENTORS/PARENTAL FIGURES TBH, I WANT TO KNOW IT ALL. Background on the other characters are also a nice break from the protagonists/love interests’ fuckery as well.
- ~~~Lingering glances: because I too am a thirteen year old girl and I think that the three hundred year old werewolf/vampire/alien/magical being/hybrid/mutant making bedroom eyes at the plucky young girl during science class is sexy and I am only a little ashamed about that.
- The guy turning evil and the girl having to kill him/save his soul: grew up on Buffy/Angel, never looked back.
- The guy using his super hearing to accidentally pick up on the girl talking about him with her friends: lmao this is weirdly specific but hey YOU ASKED OK I JUST LIKE MY YA THE WAY I LIKE IT
- WEREWOLVES. Werewolves make everything better. I would watch/read just about anything for werewolves and tbqh that policy has not led me astray yet (TEEN WOLF IS AN EXCELLENT SHOW AND YOU SHOULD ALL WATCH IT RN).
- Likeable, believable protagonists: which is something you should never ask of a YA series. Ever.
