Anonymous asked: I'm just wondering if you can explain the Australia Day stuff a bit, I looked it up but I'm sure you can explain it in a way that's easier to understand.

Australia Day is the national day for us - like the 4th of July or Bastille Day. It’s commemorated on January 26, which is the day Arthur Phillip landed at Botany Bay with a shitload of convicts and offically declared that Australia (“terra australis” yo) existed (the country of Australia offically came into being on January 1st, 1901). Of course, this also marks the beginning of the forced takeover of land and the destruction of Aboriginal culture, so there’s a whole lot of Thanksgiving nastiness thrown in there too.

Australians celebrate Australia Day by doing very Australian things - drinking a lot, having barbecues, drinking a lot, going to the beach, and drinking a lot. The Australian of the Year is announced around now and shit like that too, but no1 really curr.

So Australia Day is the one day each year in which we all get to celebrate those things that are ~Aussie to the core. Like going on trips to Bali. Or drinking really shitty beer. Or this motherfucker:

STRAYA DAY
